Question: Is it OK to turn a clock backwards?

There is no set rule, it depends on the clock! So many of my customers are shocked when they see me move the hands backwards on their clocks. In the last sixty or seventy years more than 95% of the clocks manufactured have been designed so that you can safely move the minute hand counter-clockwise.

Is it OK to move clock hands backwards?

DO NOT move the hour hand backwards (counter clockwise). Moving the hour hand backwards or moving the minute hand can strip the gears resulting in the movement having to be replaced.

Which way do you wind a clock?

The most effective way to wind your clock would be to open the front door, insert the crank, hold the clock steady with your left hand, and turn the crank with your right hand. After winding the clock, set the correct time by moving the minute hand either clockwise or counterclockwise.

Do the hands of a wall clock move clockwise if there is no battery?

A: Battery (Quartz) Clocks: Always use the hand set knob on the back of the clock mechanism to reset the time. If the hand set knob is not accessible, carefully move the long minute hand to set the time. For quartz clocks that just keep the time, the hands may be moved clockwise or counter clockwise.

Can you Overwind a clock?

Why wont my clock hands move?

If the hands on your clock refuse to remain tight, you may need to replace the nut or the clock hands. Push the hour hand against the clock shaft. Friction holds the hour hand on the shaft, and pushing it back onto the shaft will tighten it. Once you tighten the hour hand, rotate it too the correct time.

What to do if a clock is overwound?

You can also apply small amounts of clock cleaning fluid, which should be available to find online with a bristle brush if required, however most find that warm water may tackle the job just as well.
